Winchester

Tucked within the walled enclosure of a striking modern home in Winchester, this garden exudes refinement through simplicity, where soft, architectural planting gently offsets clean structural lines. The project called for an elegant and practical space to harmonise with the new brick-and-flint house while honouring the classic walled garden tradition — reinterpreted here in a contemporary key.

A sweeping curved lawn forms the heart of the garden, its sculpted edge leading the eye through the space and guiding movement from one area to the next. This fluid geometry is balanced by a series of raised beds, crisply defined by dark stone edges. These frames not only bring cohesion to the layout, but introduce subtle elevation and form, allowing the planting to cascade in layered softness.

The planting itself is lush and textural, combining traditional cottage-garden favourites with more architectural specimens. Espaliered fruit trees line the red brick boundary, their trained forms lending rhythm and elegance to the long wall. Beneath them, a richly layered underplanting delivers interest through all seasons — from bursts of white alliums and soft geraniums to ornamental grasses, salvias, and evergreen structure. Every corner offers a new composition, designed to be immersive and uplifting.

Paving in a pale natural stone provides a refined contrast to the deeper tones of the planters and building materials. The generous terraces are laid with precision and framed to define outdoor rooms — spaces for dining, reading, or quiet observation. These connect seamlessly to the internal living areas, extending the architecture out into the landscape and allowing for a true indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

Privacy and shelter are naturally achieved through the garden’s existing features: the rich warmth of the red brick walls provides both a strong architectural anchor and a sense of seclusion. Carefully placed trees and layered planting enhance this feeling, enclosing the space in greenery without overwhelming it.

Every detail was executed with a quiet confidence — from the choice of tone in the stone to the rhythm of the paving joints and the flow of planting around corners. The result is a garden that feels grounded yet light, ordered yet expressive. It is a calm retreat that evolves beautifully throughout the year, where colour, texture, and shadow are in continual dialogue.

This garden is a testament to the power of restraint — a contemporary sanctuary where thoughtful design meets natural generosity. It stands not just as an extension of the home, but as a place of daily delight, seasonal change, and enduring elegance.
