Bournemouth

Set against the coastal light and crisp architecture of a contemporary family home, this Bournemouth garden presented an opportunity to explore clean geometry, structural planting, and playful interaction. With young children in mind, the space needed to be robust and open, yet rich with planting and visual rhythm.

A strong orthogonal layout gave clarity and cohesion to the long garden, balancing its linear character with an interplay of vertical and horizontal elements. Pale porcelain paving created a luminous, sun-reflective surface that flowed seamlessly from the interior out onto the terraces. In the heart of the space, a broad lawn was framed by generous planting borders and flanked on one side by a sequence of bold black steel pergolas. These sculptural forms provided rhythm and structure without heaviness, casting dynamic shadows across the paving and anchoring the space with a quiet confidence.

The planting palette was chosen for contrast and movement. Architectural perennials and grasses — including Calamagrostis, Miscanthus and Verbena bonariensis — brought vertical lift and seasonality, while swathes of lavender and Salvia nemorosa offered scent and pollinator appeal. Accents of burgundy foliage and golden grasses punctuated the green layers, creating texture and a sense of journey. A mix of specimen trees, such as Amelanchier and ornamental cherries, added structure and dappled shade without imposing on the openness of the site.

A custom gate framed by climbers and set beneath a bespoke pergola offered a moment of transition between the rear garden and the side passage — a subtle, almost secretive threshold that reinforced the garden’s sense of considered flow. The planting in this more secluded zone took on a slightly more woodland character, with ferns and shade-loving perennials creating a softer, immersive atmosphere.

Crucially, the garden was designed to adapt and grow with the family. A bright red children’s picnic bench and open areas for play were integrated without disrupting the garden’s clean lines and spatial rhythm. Every element, from layout to planting, was carefully balanced to accommodate practical use while retaining a sense of poise and natural harmony.

The resulting space feels light, elegant, and quietly dynamic — a garden that reflects the architectural language of the home, while celebrating the joy of seasonal planting and the energy of outdoor living. It is a space where structure meets softness, and where everyday moments are held within a beautifully choreographed green frame.
