North Winchester

Tucked behind a contemporary home in Winchester, this garden was designed as a bold expression of modern outdoor living — crisp, geometric, and alive with detail. The layout balances architectural structure with moments of softness, making the space feel both dynamic and welcoming. Every element, from the paving pattern to the planting palette, was considered not just for its aesthetic contribution, but for its ability to create rhythm and flow.

At its core, the garden is defined by strong linearity. Porcelain paving, chosen for its clean finish and subtle sheen, sets the tone beneath a striking black pergola — a sculptural centrepiece that frames the outdoor lounge space and anchors the overall composition. Beneath it, modern furniture in a monochrome palette maintains the crisp aesthetic, softened by colour-pop cushions and the verdant textures surrounding the space. The pergola, both functional and architectural, defines zones without enclosure — encouraging an open and relaxed movement between dining, lounging, and garden areas.

The lawn is bordered by porcelain pavers laid in a striped format, with bands of chamomile between them — soft, low, and scented underfoot. This playful yet controlled design adds a strong graphic dimension to the space while providing a sensory quality that shifts gently through the seasons. Beyond, rendered raised beds introduce vertical structure, their pale finishes offering contrast to the rich, planted textures that spill over the edges.

Planting is rhythmic and sculptural. Varieties such as Stipa tenuissima, Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Perovskia 'Blue Spire', Phormium 'Bronze Baby', and Geranium 'Rozanne' bring movement, colour and fragrance, chosen for their resilience and soft architectural qualities. The composition unfolds through layers of evergreen structure, flowering perennials and ornamental grasses, with splashes of seasonal drama from selections like Crocosmia 'Lucifer' and Allium 'Purple Sensation'.

Punctuating the garden are a series of bold, red planters — sculptural and unapologetic — that bring a jolt of colour and contrast to the otherwise cool-toned materials. Around the boundaries, horizontal slatted timber screening provides privacy and a backdrop for climbers such as Trachelospermum jasminoides and Clematis armandii, both selected for their evergreen presence and delicate seasonal bloom.

This is a garden that moves with clarity and ease — a layout that invites both gathering and retreat. Built with discipline and softened through texture, it offers a highly considered take on contemporary garden design: confident, controlled, and quietly full of life.
